Cult of the Master of Ash

Status: Hostile

Encountered: Entry 41 Current Goal: Seizing the Ring of Orris

Overview

The Cult of the Master of Ash is a powerful necromantic organization identified through historical accounts as a group that sinks and subsequently raises ships while searching for lost artifacts. They operate using massive vessels constructed from wood so dark that it almost absorbs light. Unlike standard undead, the cult’s forces are disciplined, armored, and emanate a distinct heat.

Composition

The faction’s rank-and-file consists of armored warriors who appear to be undead behind their helmets and glow with a dark red aura. The organization is directed by high-ranking spellcasters and religious figures, such as a High Priestess, who wield staffs and fire-based magic.

Objectives

The cult’s primary directive is to secure the Ring of Orris to eliminate the “competition” of their master. This competition is identified as “she who strives for balance” (Auriel / Winter’s Core), who is currently trapped within the ring. By destroying this entity, the Master of Ash intends to “tip the scales” to secure his absolute power and vengeance.

Notable Members

  • Master of Ash: The supreme leader, described as more powerful than can be imagined.
  • Lyra Valstrath: The current High Priestess.
  • Magnus: Lyra Valstrath’s predecessor.

Our Interactions

The party first encountered the cult’s influence via the Frozen Wraith. In Entry 41, the party was ambushed by a massive cult ship. After refusing to surrender the ring, a naval battle ensued where the party successfully outran the vessel and incapacitated Lyra Valstrath. During a subsequent interrogation, the party identified a potential divine link to the deity Sargonnas and learned that releasing the entity from the ring involves a complex and dangerous procedure.
